The situation in Oroville and the California State EOC may change the way we do business as Emergency Managers in the future. During my tenure as an EOC Manager I had to deal with two major floods and the upstream dams that needed to use their spillways in order to manage the incoming flows. In both “disasters” we managed the evacuation of tens of thousands, and the misinformation of the imminent breaching.

Consider the current status of the messaging coming out of Mather, California to evacuate over 125,000 because of the so called inevitable tsunami, and the fact that their EOC is live streaming this event;

Will this be the impetus for a change in how we manage our future crises and disasters? Will we be “live streaming” our next disaster plan activation and EOC opening?
